Riga - The Castle
The residence of the Latvian president was founded in 1330 on the bank of river Daugava, as part of a complex of fortifications. Over the course of its history, the fortress was destroyed and rebuilt many times, and occupied by several foreign powers, for instance the Swedish in 1641, who razed it to ground before the leaving the country. Since 1938 the castle has been the official residence of the president of the Republic, therefore only a few areas are open to public.
